The Cubs sign Eric Hosmer, and he already has a key linebacker in Marcus Stroman

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to an understanding with first baseman Eric Hosmer, who already has a huge supporter in starting pitcher Marcus Stroman.

The Chicago Cubs have filled a variety of needs with free agency in this offseason. They brought in a shortstop in Dansby Swanson, a starting pitcher in Jameson Taillon, an outfielder in Cody Bellinger, and a catcher in Tucker Barnhart. The team still needed the base at first, but they finally addressed the form of a former four-time Gold Glove winner and World Series champion.

According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, the Cubs have reached an agreement with former Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, and Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer.

For the past week, Hosmer and the Cubs have been debating a deal.

Marcus Stroman backs up Eric Hosmer for the Cubs

Once there were reports on Hosmer Chicago is close to a deal, and Bleacher Nation wrote on Twitter that they’ve seen messages about Hosmer as a “bad club guy.” Cubs pitcher Marcus Stroman responded to the tweet, saying Hosmer was an “incredible human being” as he fired at “biased members of the media.”

Hosmer, of course, began his career with the Royal Family. He won four Gold Glove Awards during his seven years with the team, and was a pivotal part of the 2014 and 2015 teams that reached the World Series, the latter of which lifted the Commissioner’s Trophy for the first time in his career.

The veteran baserunner signed an eight-year contract with the Padres prior to the 2018 season. Last season, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox after he used a no-trade clause that would have sent him to the Washington Nationals in the Juan Soto-Josh Bell trade.

In 90 games with the Padres last season, Hosmer posted a .272 batting average, .336 on-base percentage, .391 slugging percentage, 8 home runs, 40 RBI, and 91 hits. With the Red Sox, Hosmer slashed 0.44/.320/.311 while recording four RBI, six runs, and 11 RBI.

Hosmer was set for assignment by the Red Sox after being optioned in his contract. He was eventually released by the Red Sox.

The Cubs were in need of a first baseman, and focused on bringing in Hosmer. After days of negotiations, the two sides agreed on the terms of the contract.
